Fossil-free diesel HVO100: Bridge technology for strongly CO2-reduced transports
In January 2022, BayWa subsidiary Cefetra B.V. and its logistics service provider Zijderlaan switched to the fossil-free fuel HVO100 for all journeys within the Netherlands. The result is impressive.Brief Summary

A dozen times around the world with 230,000 litres of HVO100
The forwarding company Zijderlaan covers around 500,000 kilometres a year on behalf of BayWa subsidiary Cefetra B.V.. By way of comparison, this distance corresponds to 12.5 circumnavigations of the earth. In order to reduce the resulting CO2 emissions, Cefetra switched to HVO100 in January 2022. This means that only HVO100 was used on the average 500,000 kilometres. For Zijderlaan, Cefetra B.V. was the first customer to switch completely to the fossil-free fuel. The company needed about 230,000 litres to replace conventional diesel.
730 tonnes less carbon dioxide emission
The fuel comes 100 per cent from renewable raw materials. These can be, for example, plant and animal waste fats from food processors or vegetable oils that are not intended for food production. In its composition, it is similar to fossil diesel. Therefore, HVO is suitable for every Euro 5 and Euro 6 diesel engine without technical adaptations. With the help of HVO100, CO2 emissions can be reduced immediately by up to 90 percent. Cefetra even saved 730 tonnes of carbon dioxide in one year. 58,000 trees would be needed to bind the same amount of CO2.

There are currently still some challenges on the road to electric or hydrogen-powered trucks for heavy transport. As long as this is the case, we will rely on HVO to be as climate-friendly as possible in our logistics."

According to Leo Lokker, Commercial & Operations Director at Zijderlaan, the fuel is a bridging technology. The goal is to drive a quarter of all transports with HVO by 2025. Lokker continues: "However, we need the support and commitment of our customers to achieve this. Together with Cefetra B.V., we hope to motivate other companies as sustainability ambassadors to adapt processes within their organisation and thus reduce their carbon footprint."
